Gardening advice to grow from

Advice:
Gardener, if you listen, listen well:
Plant for your winter pleasure, when the months
Dishearten; plant to find a fragile note
Touched from the brittle violin of frost.
                   —Vita Sackville-West from "The Garden"

My take:
Sackville-West wrote a garden column in the early part of the last century and was much beloved by everyday gardeners, even though she grew up in a grand estate that covered 5 acres.

These words speak to me because spring can always take care of itself, but we need to plan for winter blooms. Finding plants that bloom in winter is a favorite subject of mine—and there are plenty. I make it a point to go out into my garden Jan. 1 of each year and pick a bouquet. Often I find roses blooming, even though they are out of season.
