On location: Nevada County

November/December 2017 California Bountiful magazine

What makes it distinctive? Find out!

With its gold-enriched rivers and streams, Nevada County drew would-be prospectors from around the world to California's Gold Rush. Now, more than 150 years later, many of their descendants are farmers and ranchers in the community. Nevada City and Grass Valley retain much of the Victorian influence and have become popular attractions to visitors year-round.

Myra Davies-Rewinkle, Nevada City

Guests at the historic Dipper Valley Ranch often stare in awe at the 15 or so chestnut trees that tower above the landscape. Chestnuts, roasted over an open fire at the Nevada City Victorian Christmas, come from trees that are more than 150 years old.

Empire Mine State Historic Park, Grass Valley

Operating for more than 100 years before closing in 1956, Empire Mine was one of the oldest, largest, deepest, longest and richest gold mines in California. The nearly 850-acre park is open year-round, but annually kicks off the holiday season the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving with festive decorations, live music and costumes harkening back to the early 1900s. National Hotel, Nevada City

Established in 1852, the National Hotel is the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Rockies. It features a Victorian dining room and a saloon with an ornate back bar, and suites furnished with antiques from the Gold Rush era.

Nevada City Winery

Located less than two blocks from where the original Nevada City Winery stood more than a century ago, the current winery—founded in 1980—occupies the historic Miners Foundry Garage. Wines include zinfandel, cabernet franc, syrah and cabernet sauvignon.
