On location: Calaveras County

May/June 2016 California Bountiful magazine

What makes it distinctive? Let's find out!

Located in the central region of the Sierra Nevada, Calaveras County features historic Gold Rush towns, oak-studded foothills and, in the higher elevations, the largest living things on Earth: Giant Sequoia trees. Farms and ranches play an important role here, with cattle, timber, poultry and winegrapes among the county's top crops.

Stuart Mast, Murphys

After wildfire burned most of the family's 96-acre ranch, Stuart Mast planted his first vines and started Brice Station Vineyard in 1993, where there are now 7 acres of winegrapes growing at 3,300 feet altitude. The scenic property includes a tasting room and second family business, Quyle Kilns Pottery, and hosts summer concerts, Shakespeare theater, weddings, special events, and art and blacksmithing classes.

County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee, Angels Camp

"Boots, Chaps and Cowboy Hats" is the theme of this year's Calaveras County Fair, May 19-22, which blends entertainment, exhibits, livestock, arena events, food and the signature Frog Jump event, based on Mark Twain's famous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."

The Historic Hotel Leger, Mokelumne Hill

This "Moke Hill" destination began as a wood-framed tent in 1851 during the Gold Rush boom. The hotel's Whitewater Grill and Saloon offer farm-fresh fare, live music and special events.

Snowshoe Brewing Co., Arnold

Founded in 1995, this brewpub offers rustic ambiance, a variety of restaurant items and a Take-n-Bake menu. The award-winning ales include five mainstays that are always on tap as well as seasonal and specialty brews.

Metzger Wines and Produce, San Andreas

This family farm offers Tasting Tuesdays, when visitors can sample wine, peruse specialty items such as Randall's Candles and Luffa Sponge Gourds, and view more than 400 fruit and nut trees alongside fields of seasonal crops.
