On location: San Mateo County

May/June 2014 California Bountiful magazine

What makes it distinctive? Find out!

San Mateo County, which includes 52 miles of coastline, has a climate ideal for growing many crops, ensuring a nearly year-round supply of fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and meats for residents and visitors to enjoy.

John Giusti, Half Moon Bay

A third-generation coastal farmer, John Giusti grows a variety of crops, including Brussels sprouts, artichokes and fava beans. He says the coastal climate makes for prime farming and ranching, but this year even he and his fellow San Mateo County farmers struggle with water shortages.

Pie Ranch, Pescadero

Named for the shape of the property, Pie Ranch has many angles to love—from programs that give local high schoolers a firsthand introduction to sustainable food production, to a farm stand teeming with seasonal fruits and vegetables, to hands-on training and apprenticeships for beginning farmers.

La Honda Winery, Redwood City

La Honda Winery is located in an area of Redwood City usually known for tacos and salsa, not cabernet sauvignon and sangiovese. But behind the golden stucco walls of an industrial building lies a warm and inviting winery that produces wines from grapes grown in the county.

Filoli House, Woodside

Tucked beneath hills south of San Francisco is a country home reminiscent of an English estate. Now host to flower shows, afternoon teas and art exhibits, Filoli provides visitors with docent-led nature hikes and tours of its renowned plant collection, including a formal garden and an orchard of rare fruit.

Half Moon Bay Brewing Co., Half Moon Bay

The folks here love food as much as they love the house-made craft beer, and that's saying a lot. The brewpub's commitment to serving goods and produce from local farmers and seafood caught off the San Mateo coastline has earned it numerous "As Fresh As It Gets" awards from local farm and visitors bureaus.
