Five ways to stay healthy

For many of us, staying healthy is a matter of finding simple and easy-to-follow safeguards. Here are five ways to help ensure your well-being.

  1. Get screened—Early detection is one of the best ways to identify potential health risks before they become serious and costly medical conditions. Key screenings include:
    • High cholesterol, a major risk factor for heart disease: Starting at age 20, get screened if you use tobacco, are obese or have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or blocked arteries.
    • Diabetes, which can cause a variety of health problems: Get screened if your blood pressure is higher than 135/80 mm Hg or if you take high blood pressure medicine.
    • Colorectal cancer: Starting at age 50, ask your doctor which screening is best for you.
    • Breast cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis: For adult women, ask your doctor when you should be screened.
  2. Try an ounce of prevention—Ask your doctor if you should take aspirin to help avoid a stroke (women 55 and older) or to help prevent heart disease (men 45 and older).
  3. Move more—It's important to be active for at least 2 1/2 hours every week, performing activities that raise your breathing and heart rate.
  4. Know your risks—If you think excessive alcohol consumption or other habits may be hurting your health, ask your doctor for help.
  5. Don't smoke—If you've tried to quit in the past, don't be discouraged. It can take several attempts to quit for good.
